How to Crochet – The Cable Stitch in Crochet

Hello if you’re watching this video it
means that you’ve purchased my cable scarf pattern and before I begin this video I want to
say thank you for choosing my pattern I know that you have many choices when
it comes to increasing your a crochet library and I’m very grateful that you
chose to purchased my pattern now the cable
crochet scarf pattern is lots of fun it
turns out a beautiful piece and I’m going to show
you here visually how to do the cables I know that I right now pattern but if
you’re anything like me you need visual to really get it although I can get it you’re reading
visual is always the best for me which is why I actually love to do the
video so I’ve done a few stitches here they
should correspond a little bit with the pattern and I’ve gone ahead
and done 1 row of the double crochet now we’re coming to the second row of the double crochet which begins the actual cable patterning so in the pattern it says to double
crochet in the first 3 stitches so we’ll do that and remembering that
this side that’s facing us right now it actually the right side of the piece after those it says to skip 2 stitches so we’re gonna skip this one and this one and then it’s just a
front post triple crochet on the next post so we’re going to wrap the yarn twice as if we’re going to do a
regular triple crochet then were going to go around the post of third stitch so we insert
between so that the hook goes between then we come back around so that the Hook is actually around that post that way then were going to
pull the yarn through Behind that post and then complete the triple crochet as
normal then we’re going to do the same thing
for the next stitch so we wrap twice we go around that
post come through and then complete the
triple crochet as normal then the pattern says to go back to the two
stitches that we skipped which are these two
stitches here and do a front post triple crochet on the first skipped stitch so that would
be this one here because was the first one
that we skipped so we’re going to go back we’re wrapping
twice then were gonna take our hook and go around that stitch pull the yarn through and complete as normal then we’re going to do the same thing for the next stitch that we missed now that
one can get lost in the mix but it’s right here between the last stitch that we
did and the first stitch we did to start the cabeling so we’re going to go in here around the stitch pull the yarn through and then complete the triple crochet as normal you have begun your first cable you can see now we’re going to continue and it says in
the next stitch to do a double crochet now we’re going to skip the four stitches
that have the the front post triple crochet on them because they’ve already been used
we don’t usually go back and use the stitches that are back here we just
continue on to the next one so do 4 double crochet 1, 2, 3, 4 and then we’re back to doing another cable so we wrap twice skip 2 go around the third post triple crochet as normal wrap twice go around the next stitch triple crochet as normal then wrap twice go back to the first skipped double
crochet and triple crochet as normal wrap twice then go to the next skipped double crochet and complete your triple
crochet as normal now because of time I wasn’t able to do the
number of stitches that you have on the pattern so let’s just assume that we have now come to the end of the row and it says to double crochet in the last 3 stitches so we’ll do that chain 2 some people like to chain
3 for a double crochet I chain 2 it’s completely up to you it’s still going to look the same turn your work and then begin again so now we’re going to you double
crochet in the first 3 stitches and then we’re going to back post triple crochet in these next 4 stitches so were going to wrap twice and instead of going from this side we’re going
to take the hook towards the back here if you can see and we’re going to wrap it around the first triple crochet so we’re just
gonna insert it here then were going to
pull the yarn through and complete as a regular triple crochet then we’re going to wrap twice look to
the back go around the next triple crochet and do the same thing pull through and complete a triple crochet then we’re going to keep going in order so were going to wrap the yarn twice and insert it here
behind I don’t know if you can see that but this stitch is above that we just finished and then
there’s the 2 that are behind we’re going to go around
the first one that is behind and complete a triple crochet so those go in order wrap twice and then we’re going
to go again the next stitch here and go around the back pull the yarn
through and complete the triple crochet that is the back of your cable then we’re going to go
ahead and do the double crochet in the next four
stitches as we follow the pattern and I’m going to demonstrate the side again so
you’ve come to the cable again were going to wrap twice go around the first triple crochet come back around and complete as normal again I wrap again twice go around the second triple crochet and complete as normal wrap twice go around if you can see that were going to go around the
third triple crochet from the back and complete as normal wrap twice can go around as you can see I’m bringing my hook around the back and
around the stitch and then pulling the yarn
through and completing the triple crochet then we do the double crochet in the last three
stitches chain 2 that is the beginning of your cable pattern for the scarf if you have any

  • Hi Sedruola, good tutorial! Just one observation…when you are at the end of the row, and turn, then chain 2 or 3, that chain takes the place of a double crochet…so crochet into the 2nd double (or triple) crochet, not the first, cause you inevitably create another stitch if you dc into the first dc then count the chain as well.

  • thank you Sedruola for providing this visual tutorial on this cable stitch … you have a nice pace to this tutorial and makes it easy to follow your instructions

  • This stitch seemed so complicated at first but, you are an excellent teacher and I really appreciate you showing visually how to do this.  Very beautiful stitch! 🙂

  • wow this is the video ive been looking for 🙂 Thank you. Finally something that is clear and easy to understand. So its possible to do double crochayes before the cables, thts great to know. Now I've been working on a scarf with single crochays, Im pretty new on crochaying but I just wonder is it possible to do cables after single crochays or do I have to have double crochayes? I dont mind double crochayes but since I've started with single ch I thought maybe it can ?

  • It took me forever to figure out where I was adding an extra stitch.  You don't mention it in the video but AFTER you crochet the 4 DC & 4 cable stitches, you are skipping one then going to the next stitch.  Whew!

  • Thanl you for the video! Easy to follow but I was wondering if I could do this with a half double crochet instead? Would I then use a double crochet for the cable? Thank you!

  • THIS is awesome.  I want to collect more crochet post patterns so I can make an aran sweater someday.  By the way, orange was my favorite color waaaay back in grade 2.  I find that I still love orange.

I do have one question though (being a visual person myself), how would you go about doing this type of stitch for a blanket/afghan?

  • Best video to learn the cable. Now I feel it's possible! I gave up on it but now this has inspired me. Thank you! One question. In each round/row on the cable is it front post than back post etc? Like one row you front post triple crochet on the cable and the next round you. Back post triple crochet? Does that make sense?

  • Thank You for showing this i have been trying to learn this cable with no luck, hopefully now i can follow with you 🙂
