How to Crochet Beach Hat (FREE English US Pattern)

hello I’m Cindy from Crocket Crochet.
today I’m going to teach you how to make a beach hat like this one. the Hat had a
good shape on me and also is super flexible that you can fold it and keep
it in your bag also it’s kinda hard to make and requires a lot of time and effort but it’s worth it because it’s super pretty and now let
get started. you need the Red Heart yarn super safer and also the crochet hook: 5mm now we start with the head crown and the first row is magic ring 10 DC for beginning, the magic ring you crochet three chains and then make the
first DC. keeping the ring open like that this is the 1st DC, 2nd DC 3rd DC 4th DC , 5th DC, 6th DC, 7th DC, 8th DC 9th DC and last one 10th DC. so this DC stand for
“Double Crochet”. we’re gonna to make the Double Crochet for the first row only. and
then you just pull the yarn and close the loop and you will get the cycle like
this. this is magic ring the last step for the magic ring is to slip stitch
so you’re going to put the hook into the first stitch of this row… put the hook
inside and then pull the yarn through the loop so now you get the perfect cycle
for the second row, I will start with 2 chains and for this row, I’m
going to make the code that’s call “HDC Increase” HDC stands for “Half Double
Crochet” so as you increase is that you make two HDC in the same stitch. so,
that’s why you are increasing this stitches and for this row the code is
that you make HDC Increase for 10 times around after you make HDC increase for
10 time you will get 20 stitches for this row okay now I’m a making their HDC increase keep doing that until the end of the row all right okay and I finished the 2nd row. at
the end of the row, doing the same thing for this for every row you need to slip
stitch by putting the hook into the first stitch of the row and then pull the yarn
on for all over to the loop. okay let’s begin the 3rd row. the 3rd row, you
begin with 2 chains and then do HDC and then HDC Increase. you will do this
set for 10 times. this one is HDC and the next stitch is “HDC Increase” this is
actually increase right? because I make two HDC in the same stitch. so, I finished
the first set HDC & “HDC Increase” Do you see that? okay.. the next
one is HDC and then is HDC increase you repeat this set until the end of the
row. Actually is for ten sets. after you finishing this row,
you will have 30 stitches. 30 stitches hey I keep making the same thing
repeatedly alright, I finished the 3rd row and
then I would do slip stitch by putting the hook into the first stitch and then pull
the yarn all along. alright? I finished the 3rd row. okay, for the
4th row doing the same thing starting with 2 chains and then you we
do 2 HDC first and then ‘HDC Increase’ and then for 10 sets. however, I
will do something a little bit differently because if you do the
‘Increase’ at the same stitch as the previous row you will get not really round shape. so, I would do 1 HDC first and then doing ‘HDC Increase’ in the next row and after that you will continue making 2 HDC
and ‘HDC Increase’ for the rest okay, this one I would do HDC HDC, this is 2 HDC and then ‘HDC
Increase’ in the next stitch this is ‘HDC Increase’ right? Alright, and then you keep doing the same set until you make it around
Alright is now I finish row 4 then don’t forget to slip stitch at the end
of each row. hey let’s slip stitch alright, this is Row 4 .okay, and then
Row 5, doing the same thing, start with 2 chains. for this row, we will make 3
HDC and then ‘HDC increase’ for 10 sets this is 1 HDC.. 2 HDC.. 3 HDC.. and the
next stitch would be ‘HDC increase’ right? okay? ‘HDC increase’ for this stitch okay and keep doing the same thing
repeatedly until the end of this row We finished Row 5, Don’t forget to slip stitch. okay then For Row 6, it’ll be the same thing. you will
make 2 chains like this one and then 4 HDC and ‘HDC increase’ This is 1st HDC. I will do something a
little bit differently. this one is ‘HDC increase’ I put it at the starting point because I want to separate the HDC and I
don’t want it to be at the same “increase” stitch as the previous row because I
want my work to be as round as possible. this is absolutely
optional. you guys can just follow the normal pattern but I want my work to be
more beautiful so that’s why I keep changing the increase stitch okay after you finish the 6th row. you will get around 60 stitches. okay, I finished this row with
60 stitches if you notice that, when you
crochet more rows, work will be increased by 10 stitches every row you
crocheted because that is how the increased code represented. for the 7th
row, you make the same thing, 2 chains and then 5 HDC
and then ‘HDC increase’ and then you repeat it around. it will be 10 times and
when you finish this row you will get 70 stitches. okay, if you can you understand all the step,
you can skip it to the next step alright, I finished the 7th Row already. so, in this row, you will get totally 70
stitches. alright, and then the 8th row, you start with two chains. then you
will do 6 HDC and ‘HDC increase’ around for 10 times as well. after you
finish this row, you will get 80 stitches. If you understand the
process, you can skip it to the next row. alright, I finish the 8th Row already. okay, I finish it. alright, and next row
row 9 – row 17 you will make the same thing It is 2 chains at the beginning of each row and then you will do 80 HDC around. 80 HDC around for every row from now on. it would be a lot of work and you don’t need to worry about
anything just keep doing HDC. keep doing HDC all the time. okay and then actually I would forget to do
something like marking. you can mark at row 8 with the yarn. then you crochet
from row 9 to row 17. you’re going to make the same thing you just mark the yarn here at Row 8. it would make your work very easy and then, I finish Row 9 to Row 17 and it’s totally 9 rows. so, you can count from the
mark that is 9 rows or not. okay I keep counting 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. so it’s 9 Rows right? that you make 80 HDC around and then
we pretty much almost done for the hat crown already. after that you just
measure the circumference of the crown base first, using the measuring tool
or something that you have after I measure it,
I get about 68 centimeters or 26.5 inches. so, this is my
circumference of the crown base and then you have to use a wire. for this wire, it is
0.5 mm I brought it from Walmart you can use any type of wire. you don’t
need to use the same thing that I have so, you cut the wire for 2x of your
circumference. In this case, it would be almost 170 centimeters right? oh no no it’s not 170 it is about 140
centimeters because it’s 2x of my circumference actually you can just like
a measure for your circumference is 68 centimeters and then you fold it like
this. I need to cut all the wire out because I don’t have enough wire. just
cut it out. then, you measure two times of the circumference. then, you just cut it
out like this. okay and then you have to twirl these two layers of wire together
so, at the edge when you fought it we try to make a loop at the end of the wire
because I would do something with that loop for sure. and then you to twirl it, just like what I’m doing right now just twirl it all along the line
actually, I recommend you cutting the wire a little bit longer than what you
need because sometime something happened if you have the longer wire you
can fix it. okay and then I finished twirling the wire together already. so,
finally it will form the shape of loop of the cycle like this. This one I will
use it as the structure of the crown base Okay? I’m going to do the Row 18 and
insert this wire when I’m crocheting it. okay, you will see the loop
at the end of the wire You will see the loop. This loop is really
important so you crochet this one please watch it carefully okay? I will start with the with one chain first,
and then put the hook into the stitch and then you put the hook into the loop
at the end of the wire it’s maybe a little bit hard but please try
okay into the wire like this one Like this. you see? okay, and then you just pull the yarn through the loop and through the stitch, okay? and then you just make
one SC here. this is one SC. SC is single crochet okay you’ll see it is attaching
you already attached the wire to your work and the next is that you
just put the hook into the stitch and under the wire and then you just pull
the yarn through the stitch and then make one another
SC okay okay you will be doing the same thing for the
whole row (Row 18) put the hook into the stitch under the wire and then pull the yarn through the stitch and form one single crochet (SC)
okay, keep doing it until you have 80 SC. doing the same thing right? put the
put the hook into the stitch under the wire and then pull the yarn. okay I almost done you will see you get the structure of
the hat crown. It is pretty flexible it’s not too thick or too thin and having
this thick of the wire you can fold it and can expand it all the time, anytime
you want. keep doing it until the end of this row. sorry for the camera focus is not that good but it’s working right?
okay, let’s make keep doing SC This is also a SC and you will notice that
all the wire is already inside your work doing SC and then you almost done. For the last stitch, do not make it yet. you have to tie the wire together I have it pretty longer than my work so, I need to cut it out, okay? After you cut it out, try to put another wire into the loop like that okay we put the wire into the loop that you make and then try to tie
it up. so, you can tie to the wire up by folding the wire, alright and then you
try to expand the hat making a good share of it. try to make
a good shape of it or else it will be a mess right? try to make a good shape of
your hat you tie the the wire together, okay?
after I tie it, I’ll get something like this you see it’s already locked in together
so, to make sure that this one won’t fall apart okay?
and for the last stitch, just do SC. At the last stitch, after that, don’t forget
you need to slip stitch as well. At the end of this row. okay… this is the end of this stitch and I’m going to do a slip stitch this. okay we’ve done
with row 18. I hope you get it like this… okay… alright make it neat okay? okay let’s move to the Hat brim! For
the brim, for the 1st row, you can just keep doing that you don’t need to fasten
off on anything just keep doing it. For this row, you’re going to make the 1 chain and then 7 sc and Inc for 10 sets in this case, it might be a little
special that you need to crochet only the front loop only. the front loop means
that if you see there is 2 loops of your stitch
Take the one that is on outside. On the outside of the Hat, on the right side,
on the front loop doing 7sc and increase (Inc) For 10 sets around the row. I make 7 SC okay I’m counting it because I forgot okay okay I just finished 7 SC and for
this row, I need to do Inc increase for this stitch and then you just
keep doing the same set (7 SC, Inc) For 10 times around.
okay and then for the next row, (Row 20) you just do keep doing one chain
and then (8 Sc, Inc) for 10 times around and keep doing that until you
you finish the row, and then for the next Row (Row 21) you just doing 9 Sc, Inc
instead and then for each row from now on, you just keep increase 1 SC stitch (single crochet) every time. If you notice it’s going to be 8 SC…9 SC…10 SC… 11 SC…. 12 SC…. 13 SC all along so this part will be the head brim that it
is going to be like like a brim of your hat, right? For the tip of this one, you might need to change where you put the increase stitch because of
if you keep making as a pattern I gave you. You will finally end up having not
very round brim. so make sure you change where you put the Inc, not the same
stitch as the previous row and for the last row, you’re going to make 280 SC.
it’s a lot of work but I took a lot of time to make this one and then after you
finish this work you can fasten off at the end and then I finished the hat brim and it’s super big you know The reason why I have to make the SC because
I want to make it thick. Also, you might need to I iron it to make
it smoother alright, now we’re going to make the ridge. To make the ridge, we
make it between the row. for the first one, you’re going to mark pin on and
this ridge will look like the pattern on your brim and you make it between
this row. I’ll show you. okay, this is row 23 to 24 and then you count for
3 rows and this row 26 to 27 and then row 29 to 30 . I mark the pin for the row that have to make the ridge okay and then Row 32-33 and then Row 35-36 so the totally you have to make 6 ridges. you make it using crochet hook 5 mm and 2 threads of yarn for the ridge, it is basically just slip
stitch on the brim okay I’m going to I already made the first ridge.
this one is going to be the second ridge okay to make a ridge, you just put the crochet hook into the stitch put it in and put it on the top like this one. okay you put it the same way I did you put the crochet hook in the stitch like this. You see? like this? alright, using 5 mm crochet hook and 2 threads of yarn the purpose of this one is to make a
brim thicker. After you pull in the yarn, you just make one chain first. I thought
you make one chain. then put the hook into the stitch and then pull the yarn through the stitch and through the loop This one would form slip stitch so
you keep making the slip stitch all the way along the line and the line I was
mentioning is between the row that I just show you earlier we show
that you have to make the ridge right okay the second one the next stitch you
just put the hook into the stitch and then pull the yarn
through the stitch and through the loop this one you form another slip stitch on
the brim. okay the next one doing the same thing
put the hook into the stitch like that pull the yarn through the stitch and then
through the loop. okay, this is slip stitch okay you’ll notice that it is forming the
the ridge on the brim. this is forming the ridge
on the brim right? okay, and then you have to make it all along the line. it’s going
to be really long process because you have to make 6 ridges on the brim and
it’s a lot of work I took like 3 hours to finish all the ridge here and
this one when you finish one ridge already. just cut it out and
leave the yarn and the yarn is on the top of the brim – it’s not pretty at all
you need to hide the yarn to the back of the brim by pulling the yarn using the
crochet hook you pull the yarn to the back like this one pull the yarn through the back okay and then you just tie it together and
try to make it neat. okay, after this, I finished all the 6 ridges okay one two three four five six. 6 ridges like this one.
okay, you just keep doing it. alright, see. try to make it neat, okay for this stripe I’m
going to make a stripe using the crochet hook 3 mm to make the chain for the same
length as the circumference okay? I made a this one is the chain and I measure
it to the same length as the circumference of the base of the hat crown
okay, and after that, you’re going to make 3 chains and then doing the
Double Crochet all along the line 3 chains already and then double
crochet. this is double crochet, one DC 2 DC ok DC, you see, this is DC
alright, and you do the same thing for the whole line until the end of the line
alright, I finish the line for the last stitch, at the end of the line,
you will make 5 DC in the same stitch 1 DC. this is 2 DC. This is 3rd DC 4th DC and 5th DC. okay, after this,
you finish this one already you will keep making DC all along the line again.
DC all along the line until the end of this line doing double crochet you see
keep doing the double crochet Ok, I finished the whole line already
and for the last stitch of this work, You will make 4 DC in the last stitch okay you make 4 DC at the end of this
line again. I’m sorry for the camera is not focusing all right this is 4 DC in the same
stitch and then you will fasten off and cut the yarn I finished it the stripe already and then after that you’re going to attach the
stripe to the Hat let’s attach it by sewing it to the head crown, the base
okay after that I already finished attaching the stripe to the head already
after that, you just attach the flower you can use any flowers from the pattern
you found on internet. for this flower is sunflower I make it myself
I design myself and I will going to show you how to make this flower in the next

  • I enjoyed watching your video. I found your accent to be lovely and it did not interfere at all with your directions. I am thinking of making a smaller version of this hat for my niece who loves playing dress-up with her mother’s hats. Is the wire absolutely necessary? I was wondering if there is another material that could be used instead – just to keep from accidentally poking her (she’s only two years old). Overall, I really found your directions to be very clear and helpful for someone like me who is just starting out. Thank you so much!
