Basic Knitting Tips & Techniques : How to Make a Knit Stitch

Hi, I’m Christine Pichini with Expert Village
and today I’m going to teach you how to do the knit stitch. OK, so to do a knit stitch
here we are with our working stitches on the left needle, nothing on the right, starting
at the beginning of a row. Hold the needles loosely as we described, in your hands, and
taking the right needle, you’re going to dip it underneath the stitch facing you, like
so. That’s step one. Now you’re only dipping it underneath the top part of the stitch here,
not the underneath part here, leave that be. Dip it under. Take your yarn, wrap it around
the right needle and holding it somewhat tensely or tautly, pull it under the loop and over
the needle, like so. That’s your first ever knit stitch. I’m going to show it to you again
closer up too the camera. Dip the needle under the stitch, the top of the stitch, wrap the
yarn around the back of the needle, then this is the trickiest part, pull the stitch through
and lift the stitch up over the needle. Under the top, wrap it around, pull through and
over. Under, wrap around, under and over. Under the top stitch, wrap the working yarn,
pull the new stitch through and up over the needle. Under, wrap, pull through the loop
and over the needle. There are your new knit stitches.

  • I have extremely dexterous hands, but for some reason I'm having a difficult time controlling both the needles and the yarn simultaneously. Also, I've got an issue with my stitches being uneven and the seem to spiral around the right needle, I have to straighten them back out every time I switch hands. I'm using #11 needles that I picked up at a thrift store. Should I start with smaller needles? This is driving me nuts!

  • Thank you lady, i thought I was going to just give up on trying to knit until I came across this video! Scarves look how- here I come!!!! 😀

  • Excellent tutorials on knitting. I watched a bunch of others on YouTube, and couldn't make head nor tail of them lol. Yours were the best ones., very clear and easy to see and understand. Thank you.

  • This is by far the best tutorial on the internet! She does it slow and close enough for the audience to see.

Congratulations, ma'am, you've achieved the impossible. You've taught me the knit stitch.

  • I do not like this video WHY? because I want it to be basic step by step from the start then to the end this person started to far.

  • Hi Christine, I have decided that I can not knit. I have tried so many times but I can't get passed casting on. When I try to do the knit stitch or purl stitch, the yarn on the left hand that I am working with gets so tight that it's a struggle to stick the needle behind the working stitch. When I cast on, I do it loosely to avoid this, but it tightens as I continue. What the heck am I doing wrong? I have watched several videos and just can't get it. Help!!!

  • After getting incredibly frustrated using other how to's, walk throughs and videos I think I finally figured out how to do the basic knit stitch with this video! Thank you so much!

  • Thank you! I was holding the needle with the yarn between my knees so I could use both hands to pull the yarn through. Thank you for showing the correct way! I'm knitting much quicker, and my stitches aren't falling off!

  • the same thing is happening to me! the only difference is that it only gets really tight at the end, when i'm trying to pull out the stitch.
